In 1987 the well-known artist Anton Lehmden (1929 – 2018) was commissioned to design the “Volkstheater” subway station in downtown Vienna. The project was completed in 1991 with the inauguration of the impressive mosaic of more than 300 square meters.
The mosaic work created by multiple mosaicists based on the design of the well-known painter “The Becoming of Nature” decorates three sides of the station and depicts the birth of the universe: the Big Bang in the central panel and the formation of planet earth on the side walls. The mosaic was made in reverse technique on Venetian enamel paper. The precious mosaic succeeded in perfectly interpreting the 2realism fantasy” of the design, giving the texture of the tiles a lightness that refers to the intangible world of imagination.
