The artwork consists of three 310 x 230 cm panels that cover a centrally located elevator shaft in the large atrium of the Steinbach am Attersee municipal building.
The mosaic becomes an integral part of the building, becoming a distinctive element of it and helping to define the spaces.
The mosaic is based on a sketch by artist C. L. Attersee, who in these paintings – Gustav Mahler night and Gustav Mahler day – wanted to pay tribute to the great Austrian composer and conductor, who spent summer vacation periods here in Steinbach from 1893 to 1896.
The mosaics are made by a direct technique with Venetian and sintered glazes. The thousands of possible shades of the glazes made it possible to perfectly translate the complex polychrome sketch, Attersee’s stylistic hallmark, into an artistic mosaic with an appealing aesthetic appeal.
