The massive mosaic of more than 100 square meters decorates the commercial and hotel building, designed by architect Ernest Huss, located on Mariahilfer Strasse, one of the main hubs of the city center and an important Viennese shopping street.
The mosaic is about 13 meters high and 8 meters wide, gradually widening downward.
The work is based on a sketch by Austrian artist Christian Ludwig Attersee and depicts the majestic Greek god Hermes, protector of merchants.
Hundreds of different shades of Venetian enamels were used in the creation of this mosaic using a reverse technique on paper, essential for translating Attersee’s multicolored brushstrokes into mosaic, a chromatic richness that is the hallmark of his artistic production.
