The mosaic adorns the main facade of the hospital from which the town itself takes its name; in fact, the town owes its name to Spittal, one of the oldest hospitals in Carinthia, founded in 1191.
The project was strongly desired by Hermann Samonigg, whose family has been running this private hospital for more than seventy years, who entrusted the well-known artist C. L. Attersee.
The design depicts a wren and a sparrow in love, surrounded by the sun, the moon and the riches of nature, all painted by brushstrokes with a strong chromatic character, well translated into mosaic with the decisive hues of Venetian enamels. Making the whole work more vibrant is the weaving of the tesserae in direct technique, which gives the mosaic great expressive character.
